This Caribbean haul out facility’s recent investment has been to upgrade our large haul out slip from 150 to 220 tons. Our storage capacity for storing cruising yachts for the hurricane season has increased by 15 yachts because of a new concreted area outside the main gates.
Antigua Slipway regularly check tie downs and equipment which secure yachts in storage. All tie downs, chocks and welds are checked in late June in anticipation of a potential hurricane and regularly thereafter. ‘Be prepared’ is our motto.
If the owner of a yacht is leaving a boat at Antigua Slipway for storage in the Caribbean hurricane season and he plans on being absent during the whole hurricane risk period, each owner should make sure that he removes everything that could catch in the wind or that can become airborne; anything that could injure someone or damage other boats laid up ashore beside it.
Remove all sails, bimini tops, canvas covers, dinghies and solar panels if they are exposed and furling headsails. Main sails can be left on in a cover and half hitched/bent along the boom to prevent wind getting under the cover. Safely secure halyards and make sure that cockpit drains are unblocked. In a hurricane tree foliage blows along with airborne debris, so we urge boats in storage to cover cockpit and deck drains with an inverted cheap sieve secured in position.

The whole boatyard is concreted now after hurricane Luis in 1995. We have the area for 50 storage boats every year and as yacht storage yards go.... this is by far the safest in Antigua. Because of our size we do not provide ready-made yacht storage cradles. However, we do not face an open roadstead with no topographical protection. At Slipway we weld stands as an effective cradle. We do not connect three straps from three different boats to one concrete anchor as is the practice at other yards. In a hurricane the Slipway yard is probably the most protected storage yard in Antigua in the hurricane hole of English Harbour.
We strap down with four 4 ton straps on each cleat of the boat, attached to positioned concrete anchors.... and six stands under each boat all welded together with 1” water pipe; Antigua Slipway in effect make a very strong detachable cradle under every yachy in storage.
